Alexander was the great king of Macedonia.  As to the Gordion Knot, an oracle in Phyrigia had commended that a man who would arrive in a wagon should be made king.  Gordius, a poor peasant, drove into town one day and was king.

Gordius, whose son Midas later became king of Phyrigia, dedicated in gratitude his wagon to the deity of the oracle and fastened it with a strong knot to a pillar.

Many people tried to undo it for the legend arose that whoever succeeded in undoing it would conquer Asia.

Alexander the Great cut it after lack of success in untying it and thus was the legend ended.
