After crossing the channel we arrive at Troy, one of Anatolia's oldest cities.  We hear of Troy, described in Homer's Iliad, for the first time during a beauty contest.  This contest was probably the first to be ever held in the world.  It took place at Mt.Ida.  The three finalists were Zeus' wife Hera; their daughters Aprodite and Athena.  The one to choose the winner was Paris, son of Priamos, King of Troy.
He chose Aphrodite.  For his reward Aphrodite kidnapped the wife of King Menelaus of Sparta, the Beautiful Helene.  And thus the great long war started.
The Greeks wished to recapture Helene and had such heroes as Achilles and Odyssey on their side.  The capture of Troy took a long time and was successful only with the trick of Achilles. The Greeks wished to recapture Helene and had such heroes as Achilles and Odyssey on their side.  The capture of Troy took a long time and was successful only with the trick of Achilles.  The Greeks constructed a huge wooden horse and left it in front of the gates of the city walls.   The Greek army retreated to give an effect of defeat.  The Trojans were deceived and they pulled the giant horse inside the city.  But they were unaware that a group of Greek soldiers had hidden inside the horse.  They celebrated their victory and fell asleep drunk with joy.  The Greek soldiers climbed out when the city was asleep and opened the gates of the city and this was Troy finally captured.
