The Southeastern Anatolia Project The Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP) is a human- focused, regional development project which has the objective of the complete social and economic development of the Southeastern Anatolia Region, which was known as "Upper Mesopotamia" and was the cradle of civilization in ancient times. The GAP, which brought Turkey to an exemplary position in the world on the subject of regional development, is being continued within an approach of an integrated and sustainable development, which includes the continuation of the construction of dams and hydroelectric power plants and irrigation facilities on the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers, besides invest- ments in urban and rural infrastructure, agriculture, transportation, industry, education, health, housing, tourism and other sectors. As a human-focused deve-lopment project, the GAP aims at the attainment of better living standards for the people in the region and the removal of the differences in the level of development with other regions. The GAP attracts the justified attention of the entire world with its human and innovative approach along with its technical characteristics and physical dimensions. The project has already positively affected the life of the people in the region by creating employment, raising the income level and developing the service capacities of the urban and rural centers. In spite of the fact that there are many things which still have to be realized within the scope of the project, the results obtained up until the present are providing positive messages to Turkey and the world that a new and brighter civilization can be created in this region which witnessed the first civilizations in history.
