The functions undertaken by the police organization are performed by approximately 175,500 personnel. Approxima- tely 150,000 of these personnel work in security services, 20,000 in auxiliary services, about 5,000 work in general administrative services and over 500 work in health services. In addition, about 1,500 persons are employed as contract personnel or workers to perform other services. The source of personnel at management level of the Turkish Police Organi- zation is the Police College (High School), followed by the Police Academy, and the source of civil servants for the organization are the police schools in various provinces in Turkey.

. The Gendarmerie Organization
The Gendarmerie organization performs its functions in the areas outside of the borders of the municipalities. The Gendarmerie General Command performs security and public order services an area covering 92 percent of Turkey, by means of its 12 Gendarmerie Regional Commands, 80 Gendarmerie Provincial Commands, 900 Gendarmerie County Commands and 2,628 Gendarmerie Internal Security Stations. Gendar- merie Commando Units have been formed with the function of intervention and support with sufficient forces against events that exceed the capacity of the regular gendarmerie units, stationed around the country in accordance with the administrative organization of Turkey. Furthermore, there are Gendarmerie Aviation Units for air interventions, which provide services throughout Turkey. Temporary Public Order Stations, with vans, are being established to provide peace and security in regions where the population increases at certain times of the year. In recent years, in parallel with the increasing activities in tourism, services to provide security and public order are being carried out by Gendarmerie Stations having personnel with special uniforms and who know foreign languages, in the regions where tourism activities are concentrated. On the other hand, in provinces where winter tourism is intensive, Gendarmerie Mountain Search and Rescue Teams provide service with the aim of carrying out such activities as aid to the public, search and rescue.

Activities aimed at the more extensive utilization of criminal research techniques have been accelerated in recent years. With this objective, the Central Criminal Laboratory was established in Ankara in 1993 and the Criminal and Narcotic Team Commands, Fingerprint and Criminal Record Archives Sections and Bomb Disposal Teams within the structure of Provincial Gendarmerie Commands have been activated.

The General Command of Gendarmerie, in addition to its domestic services, also sustains its activities in the "FIEP" organization consisting of French, Italian, Spanish and Portugal gendarmeries and which is also called Union of European Gendarmerie, and Black Sea Economic Coope- ration (BSEC), in order to cooperate in fighting against international terrorism, drug trafficking and organized crimes. It also continuously develops cooperation with the gendar- meries of other countries. Currently, cooperation agreements are in force with 39 countries on military training, security, terrorism and fighting against organized crimes. In this context, Training Teams of Turkish Gendarmerie are working in Gambia, Azerbaijan and Nakhichevan, and besides, military personnel from Georgia, Turkmenistan, France and Tunisia are receiving training.
