- This winter sports center is

Museums

- Anıtkabir
(Atatürk Mausoleum)
-
The Atatürk Mausoleum is a
stately structure located on a hilltop and visible from many parts of
Ankara. Construction began in 1944 and was completed in 1953. There are
pavilions with bas-reliefs on each side. The square is 80 x 130 meters
with a capacity of 40,000 people. Monumental steps lead up to the
mausoleum. In the wings of the mausoleum are many items associated with
Atatürk’s life, including books and motorcars. Location: Anıttepe. Tel:
2317975. Open daily between 9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 1:30-5:00 p.m.,
except Mondays.

- Ankara Citadel
-
It was built during the
Byzantine era and was restored by the Seljuks and Ottomans. It has an
inner and outer section. The outer citadel was built in 668 A.D. by order
of the Byzantine Emperor, Constantine. The outer section has more than 20
towers and surrounds the old city of Ankara. The inner citadel, thought to
have been built in the 8th century B.C. is built partly of Ankara stone.
The inner citadel has two main gates: the Parmak Kapısı and the Hisar
Kapısı. Location: Ulus. Tel: 3112540. The citadel is always open.

- Museum of Anatolian
Civilizations
(Hittite Museum)
-
This museum is housed in two
fifteenth century buildings. One was a caravanserai, which was an inn
while the other was a bedesten, a covered market place. These two
structures were skillfully joined. Many archeological finds are on display
in the museum such as pre-Historic, Phrygian and Urartian objects. The
museum reflects Anatolian civilizations dating from Paleolithic to
Classical times and has an outstanding collection of Hittite art. Some of
the antiquities on exhibit date back to the sixth millennium B.C. Location:

- Ethnographical Museum
-
It contains 40,000 Turkish
artifacts and ethnographic objects from the Seljuk period to the present.
The museum displays the life-style, tools, clothing and interior
decorations of the Anatolian people. It was built between 1925-27. It has
10 display halls, a library and archives. Location: Ulus. Tel: 3119556.

- Museum of the War of
Independence

Housed in the Second National
Assembly building, the displays in the museum illustrate the technical,
cultural, political and social developments, which have occurred since the
founding of the Republic in 1923 to the present. Location: Ulus. Tel:

- Roman Baths Museum
-
Built in the 3rd century A.D by
the Roman Emperor Caracalla and dedicated to Roman God of Health,
Asklepion, the bath area measures 80 x 130 meters. Most of the baths,
service halls and resting rooms were uncovered during excavations carried
out between 1937-1943 by the Turkish Historical Society. Location: Ulus.

- State Museum of Painting
and Sculpture

Illustrates the history of

- Atatürk's House

A replica of the house in
Salonica where Atatürk was born. Location: Atatürk Orman Çiftliği. Open (Tuesday,

- The Column of Julian
-
Stands in front of the Vali
Konağı (Governor's Mansion) in Ulus and was erected in honour of the Roman
Emperor Julian during his visit to ancient Ankara.

- Temple of Augustus
-
The temple was built in the
Corinthian order in the second century B.C., It was first dedicated to the
Mother Goddess of Anatolia, Cybele, then to the Phrygian Moon God and
finally to the Roman Emperor Augustus. It was converted into a church in
the fourth century A.D. during the Byzantine era. The door to the temple
is 8.5 meters high. Location: Ulus.

- Museum of Natural History

Contains a rich collection of

Mosques
-
- Alaeddin Mosque
-
The mosque was built in 1178 by
order of the Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubat. It was later restored by
various Ottoman Sultans. Location: Ulus.

- Hacı Bayram Mosque
-
The mosque was built in 1425,
two years before the death of Hacı Bayram Veli, the founder of the Bayrami
Cult. In the tradition of all Seljuk mosques, it has wooden supports and a
wooden ceiling. The interior of the mosque was embellished at the end of
the 17th century by a famous decorator named Mustafa and restored by the
master architect Sinan. Location: Ulus

- Hacı Musa Mosque

It was built in 1460 by Hacı
Musa, the son of Şerefettinzade Musa. The mosque is located on the grounds
of Hacettepe University Hospital. Location: Hacettepe.

- Kocatepe Mosque
-
This mosque has been recently
constructed and is one of the biggest in Turkey. Location: Kocatepe.

- Zincirli Mosque
-
Built by Şeyhülislam Mehmed Emin
in the year 1685. It has a rectangular floor plan and contains quotations
from the Koran on its windows. Location: Ulus.

Historical Places, Parks
-
- Aynalıkavak Pavilion
-
Built in 1792 during the reign
of Sultan Ahmet III as a hunting lodge. It is an excellent example of
typical Ottoman architecture. Tha pavilion overlooks the Golden Horn.

- Aqueducts
-
There are seven aqueducts in the
Belgrade Forest, covering an area of about 14,000 hectares. The Belgrade
Forest is about 12 km from Istanbul.

- Bozdoğan Arch
-
Situated between the Fatih and
Şehzadebaşı districts, this arch was built in 365 AD by the Roman Emperor
Valens. It is made of stone and is 592 meters high.

- Büyükçekmece Lake
-
The lake is situated in the
vicinity of Küçükçekmece district. The master Architect Sinan built a
famous bridge where the lake joins the sea.

- The Burnt Column
-
The Roman Emperor Constantine
the Great decided to rebuild Istanbul and had this column brought from
Rome. On top of the column is a statue of Apollo. During the reign of
Sultan Mustafa II, iron hoops were placed around the column because it had
become unsafe due its age. Location: Çemberlitaş.

- Covered Bazaar
-
It was built in 1461 by order of
Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror. This wooden structure was restored in 1954
after several fires. With its 65 streets, 4,400 shops, 20 inns, one mosque,
10 mescids, 19 fountains and Turkish bath, it covers an area of 30,000
square meters. The Covered Bazaar is one of the main attractions of
Istanbul where one can shop for almost anything. Location: Beyazıt.

- Çamlıca Hill
-
Situated on the Asian side of
İstanbul, this 262 meter high hill provides a panoramic view of the city
and has a nice tea-house. Location: Üsküdar.

- Emirgan Woods
-
Three kiosks, namely the Pink,
Yellow and White Kiosks are located in this park overlooking the Bosphorus.
This is the site of the annual Tulip Festival and offers excellent coffe-houses.
Open everyday. Location: Emirgan.

- Ahmet III Fountain
-
Located near the first gate of
Topkapı palace, it has green and blue tiles and is an Ottoman
architectural masterpiece.

- The Galata Tower
-
The Galata Tower, a Genoese
structure built in 1348, rises 62 meters high over the Golden Horn. It has
a magnificent panoramic view of Istanbul at the top such as the Golden
Horn and the Bosphorus. In the evening, tourists enjoy its popular
restaurant, nightclub and bar.

- Gülhane Park
-
Opened to the public in 1912,
the park has coffee-houses and a zoo. There is also a statue of Atatürk
made by the Austrian sculptor Krippen and the historic Column of the Goths.

- Hıdiv Kasrı
-
Palatial house of the last
Governor-General of Egypt. It is now a restaurant and hotel. Location:
Çubuklu

- Hippodrome
-
The site where various sporting
events and festivities were held during the Byzantine era. Location:
Sultanahmet.

- Obelisk
-
Carved out of granite brought
from Egypt, the Byzantine imperial family is depicted around the base of
the column. Location: Sultanahmet.

- Pierre Loti
-
Situated on the hills of Eyüp
and extending down to the Golden Horn, it was a popular promenading area
during the Ottoman Era. Prominent literary men of the time used to gather
in the Pierre Loti coffee-house situated here. At present, there is a
coffee-house decorated with examples of ancient Turkish handicrafts.

These beautiful islands derive
their name from their historic role as places of exile for Byzantine
royalty. Here one may find pinewoods, horse-drawn carriages, and charming
historic houses.
