The special education schools and institutions offer educational services to the students who are visually-impaired, hearing-impaired, physically-impaired, orthopaedically handicapped, mentally retarded (educable, teachable), those experiencing adaptation problems and the gifted. 

 
 
Schools offering special education are also synchronous with the levels in the Turkish national education system. However, there is a preparatory class before primary education begins. Meanwhile, the handicapped students who are able to attend primary schools skip preparatory classes.
 
Nearly 27,000 students were educated in 549 special education schools by some 4,600 teachers during the 2006-2007 school year. In addition, at special education classes 9,500, and in other schools over 54,000 handicapped are receiving integration training. There are 513 students in the nursery classes of 61 special education schools.
 

During the 2006-2007 school year, students graduated from 93
universities, 68 of them public and 25 private.

  Private Education: Private schools of all kinds and at all levels such as private preparatory courses, private vocational and technical courses, private driving schools, private training and rehabilitation centers and private study centers comprise the private education.  
 

Some 2.7 million students were educated in nearly 11,500 private schools by 107,000 teachers during the 2006-2007 school year.

 
Higher Education: Higher education includes educational institutions training people at the  highest level and the staff required by scholarly research disciplines at associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and associate professor level degrees, following at least two years of post-secondary education.
 
One needs to study at least four semesters after secondary education to receive an associate’s degree and at least eight semesters for a bachelor’s. Master’s degrees, on the other hand, require either at least two semesters of study after a bachelor’s degree or 10 semesters of study after secondary education. Master’s degrees holders are regarded as specialists or experts in their field of study.
 

The total number of universities in Turkey during the 2006-2007 academic year was 93. While 68 of them were public, the remaining 25 were private universities affiliated with foundations. A total of 603 faculties, 182 schools of higher education, 486 vocational schools of higher education and 292 institutes offered services within the scope of these universities.

 
The number of students receiving higher education during the 2006-2007 academic year, including those attending the Open University, was 2.3 million, and the number of academic staff was 82,250.
