 1960

  • Dört Büyükler Zirvesi Paris’te başladı. Zirve görüşmeleri, 17 Mayıs’ta ABD’nin Sovyetlerce düşürülen U2 uçağının gerginliğiyle yarıda kaldı.

  • The Big Four Summit started in Paris. The summit talks were terminated as the result of the tension from the shooting down by the Soviets of the USA's U2 aircraft on 17 May.

  • 27 Mayıs: Silahlı Kuvvetler yönetime el koydu. Milli Birlik Komitesi kuruldu.
  • 27 May: The Turkish Armed Forces took over the administration. The National Unity Committee was established.

  • 10 Haziran: Celal Bayar, Adnan Menderes ve çok sayıda DP’li siyasetçi ve bürokrat, tutuklanarak yargılanmak üzere Yassıada’ya götürüldü.
  • 10 June: Celal Bayar, Adnan Menderes and a large number of politicians and bureau-crats from the Democrat Party were arrested and taken to Yassıada to be put on trial.

  • 20 Haziran: Almanya, Türkiye’den işçi almaya başladı. İlk kafile 24 Haziran’da yola çıktı.  BYEGM

  • 20 June: West Germany started to recruit workers from Turkey. The first group departed for West Germany on 24 June.

  • 9 Temmuz: Kurucu Meclis tarafından belirlenen ve Anayasa Komisyonu’nca hazırlanan yeni anayasa için referandum yapıldı. Yeni Anayasa, % 61.5 evet oyu ile kabul edildi.  BYEGM
  • 9 July: A referendum was held for the new constitution that was prepared by the Constitutional Commission which was appointed by the Constituent Assembly. The Constitution was accepted with an affirmative vote of 61.5% of the voters.

  • 20 Ağustos: Doğu Almanya, Berlin’i ikiye ayıracak 43 km’lik dikenli tellerle desteklenen duvarın yapımını başlattı.

  • 20 August: East Germany started the construction of the 43 km Berlin Wall supported by barbed wire which would divide Berlin.

  • Ünlü Amerikalı yazar Ernest Hemingway intihar etti. Cumhuriyet/AP

  • Ernest Hemingway, the famous American author, committed suicide.

  • 12 Nisan: İlk uzay adamı Sovyet Yuri Gagarin, Vostok uzay gemisiyle dünya turuna çıktı. L’Express

  • 12 April: Yuri Gagarin, the first Soviet Cosmonaut orbited the earth in the Vostok spacecraft.

  • 22 Şubat: Harp Okulu Komutanı Albay Talat Aydemir’in önderliğinde başlayan darbe girişimi, kısa sürede bastırıldı.

  • 22 February: The attempted coup d'état  under the leadership of Colonel Talat Aydemir, the Commander of the War Academy, was quickly suppressed.

12 Aralık: John Steinbeck Nobel Edebiyat Ödülü’nü aldı. Cumhuriyet

  • 22 Kasım: ABD Başkanı Kennedy,Dallas’ta öldürüldü. AP
  • 22 November: John F. Kennedy, the US President, was assassinated in Dallas, Texas.

  • 24 - 25 Aralık: Kıbrıs’ta Kanlı Noel: Kıbrıs’ı Yunanistan’a bağlamak amacıyla kurulan EOKA üyesi Rumlar, Kıbrıs Türklerine karşı saldırı başlattı. Elliye yakın kişinin öldürüldüğü katliam sonrası başlayan çatışmalar, yılın ilk günlerine kadar sürdü. Türk tarafının kaybının 400 kişi olduğu açıklandı. BYEGM

  • 24-25 December: Bloody Christmas on Cyprus: Greek Cypriot members of the EOKA organization which was established to annex Cyprus to Greece, started attacks against the Turkish Cypriots. The fighting which started after the massacre of close to 50 Turkish Cypriots continued through the first days of the new year. It was announced that the Turkish side suffered 400 casualties.

  • 8 Ağustos: Glasgow- Londra seferini yapan trende, yüzyılın en büyük silahlı soygunu gerçekleştirildi. AP

  • 8 August: The largest armed robbery of the century took place on the train from Glasgow to London.

  • 12 Eylül: Türkiye’nin Ortak Pazar’a ‘ortak üye’ olarak katılmasını sağlayan anlaşma Ankara’da imzalandı.  BYEGM
  • 12 September: The Ankara Agreement, which would provide for the participation of Turkey in the Common Market as an  "associate member" was signed in Ankara.

  • 31 March: The United States of America became directly involved in the Vietnam War by sending 3,500 marines to Vietnam.

  • 27 Mayıs: Hindistan Başbakanı Nehru öldü.

  • 24 October: The Reverend Martin Luther King, the defender of civil rights in the USA, won the Nobel Peace Prize.

  • 9 Ekim: Genel seçimlerde Adalet Partisi oyların % 53’ünü alarak 240, Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi % 28.7’sini alarak 134, Türkiye İşçi Partisi ise % 2.8’ini alarak 14 milletvekili çıkardı.  Hürriyet

  • 9 October: In the general elections the Justice Party obtained 240 seats in the Parliament with 53% of the votes, the Republican People's Party obtained 134 seats with 28.7% of the votes and the Turkish Labor Party obtained 14 seats in the Parliament with 2.8% of the votes.

  • 18 Mart: Sovyet kozmonot Aleksey Leonov, ilk kez uzayda yürüdü. Cumhuriyet/AP
  • 18 March: Aleksey Leonov, the Soviet cosmonaut, was the firstman to walk in space.

  • 25 Temmuz: Papa VI. Paul Türkiye’yi ziyaret etti. Sabah
  • 25 July: Pope Paul VI visited Turkey.

  • 3 Aralık: Güney Afrikalı Dr. Christian Barnard ilk kalp naklini gerçekleştirdi. L’Express

3 December: Dr. Christian Barnard, the South African surgeon, performed the first successful human-heart transplant operation.

  • 9 Ekim: Küba Devrimi’nin önderlerinden Che Guevera Vallegrande yakınında Bolivya’lı askerler tarafından öldürüldü. Cumhuriyet
  • 9 October: Ernesto "Che" Guevara, one of the leaders of the Cuban Revolution, was killed by Bolivian soldiers near Vallegrande.

  • Abidin Dino, the famous artist, was in Paris during student demonstrations.

  • 12-15 Nisan: Daha sonra yıllarca ‘68 Kuşağı’ ve ‘68 Olayları’ tanımlamalarına neden olacak gençler, Almanya’da ve 5 Mayıs’ta ad Fransa’da öğrenci olaylarını başlattı.   • 12-15 April: The youth who would in later years be referred to as the "68 Generation" and the events as the "68 Incidents" started student demonstrations in Germany and on 5 May in France. The student incidents also spread to Turkey and led to occupation of the Ankara and Istanbul universities. The examinations were postponed and the Istanbul University was closed down on 24 June.

  • 20-21 July: First man on the moon: Neil Armstrong was the first man to set foot on the moon. He was followed by Edwin Aldrin.
