Aslında, yaşanan anın gerçekliği ile sınırlıdır yaşam. Geçmiş ise, belleklerde, belgelerde, anılarda kalan anlatılardır yalnızca. İnsanlık, usun belirlediği ve yüzyıllar boyunca geliştirdiği yöntemlerle bu anları belgelemeye dolayısıyla da tarihini kalıcı kılmaya çabalar. Yazı, resim, fotoğraf ve şimdilerdeyse bilgisayar dataları, web siteleri bu çabanın halkalarını oluşturur. Bu araçlar tarihi olayları belgeleme aşamasının ilk halkası olan güncel habercilikten yola çıkar. Basın, günlük gazeteler ve yayın organları, zamanı dondurup saklamaya çalışırken, fotoğraf olayların görselliklerine tanıklık eder. Bu nedenle, ardından gelen sayısız ve sınırsız buluşlara karşın hala insan yaşamı için önemli iki büyük buluştur fotoğraf ve matbaa.
Saniyeler saatlere, saatler günlere, günler haftalara, haftalar aylara, aylar yıllara dönüşürken, güncel yaşamın sıradan akışı arasından, tarihi dönemeçleri belirleyen olaylar süzülmeye ve insanlık tarihinin satırbaşları yazılmaya başlar. Geriye dönüşü olmayan, belleklerde sınırlı süreçlerde kalıcılık kazanabilen bu olayların belirlenerek yazılmaları ve gelecek nesillere aktarımınınsa, ancak düzenli belgelemelerle sağlanabileceği kesindir. Özellikle de görsel algıyı kalıcı kılan fotoğraflarla, olaylar onları yaşayanlara geçmişlerini aydınlatan seçme kareler olarak anımsatılabilir. Önemlisi, gelecek nesillere tarihe tanık olma şansının sağlanabilir olmasıdır. Bu gerçekler göz önüne alınırsa, belgelemenin, arşivlemenin ve hatta belgesel ve bilimsel kitaplarda olayları toplamanın ne denli önemli olduğu açıkça ortaya çıkacaktır.
Basın-Yayın ve Enformasyon Genel Müdürü Sayın Aydın Sezgin, son yüzyılı resimlerle anımsatacak ve gelecek nesillere belgesel fotoğraflarla aktaracak bir albüm hazırlığının editörlüğünü ve organizasyonunu üstlenmemizi istediklerinde, bu nedenle büyük bir heyecan duyduk. Bu ereği yüceltecek bir kitabın hazırlıklarına başladık. 1899-1999 Yüzyıl.
Tarihsel kesit olarak 2000'e bir yıl kala geriye dönüp bakmak ve tarihsel kareleri yeniden anımsatmaktı amaç. Yüzyılın yüz olayını belgelemek ereğiyle araştırmalara başlamamızdan kısa bir süre sonra, yüzyılı biçimlendiren olayların çokluğu ve vazgeçilemezliği karşısında gerçekten şaşırdık. Nesnellik sınırlarının bireysel duyarlık ve kültürel, bilimsel altyapıyla sınırlı olduğunun bilincinde, olayların belirlenmesine yöneldik. Arşivler arasında dolaşırken ortak paydada buluşan dönemeçlerin altını çizmeye özen gösterdik. Az olay, çok fotoğraf bulacağımız konusundaki umutlarımız, çalışma ortamının ilerleyen aşamalarında ters döndü. Çok olay, az fotoğraf gerçeği, özellikle fotoğrafın yaygın olarak kullanılamadığı 1899 ve 1940'lı zaman dilimi içinde çarpıcı bir olgu olarak önemli sıkıntılar yarattı. Ancak son yıllarda arşiv yapma bilincinin gelişmesini gösteren alanların içinde ilerlemek bilgilerimizle birlikte umutlarımızı da büyüttü.
Geçmiş olayları belgeleyen gazete küpürleri ve kitapları tararken anlatım dilinin yanı sıra tekniklerinin ve önemlisi toplumsal düşünce yapısının ne denli değiştiğine tanık olmanın heyecanını yaşadık. Bir yılı aşkın bir süreç içinde, yıllar, olaylar ve eski kitaplar, dergiler, gazeteler ve ajanslardan derlediğimiz fotoğraflar kitaba dönüşürken, öncelikle zamanın teknolojik gelişmelerini ve geçmişin zorluklarını yansıtması açısından özellikle ilk yılları belgeleyen fotoğrafların bilgisayar teknikleriyle iyileştirilmemesine, orijinal hallerinin korunmasına karar verdik.
Sonuca vardığımızda, gerçekte henüz başlangıçta olduğumuzu, yüzyıl için farklı değerler üzerine sayısız kataloglar düzenleme şansının ne denli fazla olduğunun bilincine ulaştık. Biriktirdiğimiz belgeler ve fotoğraflar arasından Basın-Yayın ve Enformasyon Genel Müdürlüğü'nün seçimini bir kitap olarak düzenlemeye özen gösterdik.
Kitabın araştırma aşamalarında arşivlerini bize açan, kitabımızın ilk sayfasında adını andığımız tüm kurum ve kuruluş ve
şahıslara, katkıları için gönülden teşekkürler sunarız.

- INTRODUCTION
Actually, life is limited to the reality of the moment experienced. The past is only a narration which remains in memories, documents and what is remembered. Human beings try to document these memories with methods determined by the mind and developed for
hundreds of years. Consequently, human beings also attempt to make their history permanent. Writings, pictures, photographs and
these days, computer data and web sites are constituting the links of this effort. These implements start from current news reporting that is the first stage in the link of documenting historical events. The press, daily newspapers and the publication organs attempt to freeze and preserve time, while photographs are witnesses to the visualities of the events. For this reason, photographs and the printing press are still two very significant inventions for human life in spite of numerous and countless inventions which have followed them.
While seconds are transformed into hours, hours into days, days into weeks, weeks into months, and months into years, in between
the ordinary flow of daily life, the events determining the historical changes start to be filtered and the headings of human history start to be written. It is certain that to determine and write these events for which there is no return and which can only gain vitality for a limited period of time in the memories, and to convey them to future generations, can only be provided with well-organized documentation. Especially with photographs, that make visual perception permanent, events can be remembered as selected frames which illuminate and explain the pasts of events and those who experienced them. The important thing is that it can provide the opportunity for the future generations to be a witness to history. When these facts are taken into consideration, the extreme importance of documenting, archiving and even collecting the events in documentary and scientific books becomes clearly evident.
For this reason, we were very excited when Aydın Sezgin, the Director General of the Directorate General of Press and Information
asked us to undertake the editing and organization for the preparation of an album that would be a reminder with photographs of the past century and which would be transferred to future generations with documentary photographs. We started the preparations of the book which would exalt this goal, the 100 Years between 1899 and 1999.
The objective was to recall the past and remember once again the historical frames as a historical cross-section one year before 2000. A short time after we started the research with the goal of documenting the one hundred events of the past century, we were truly amazed when faced with the profusion and indispensability of events. We aimed at determining the events with the consciousness that the limits of objectivity are restricted by individual sensitivity and cultural and scientific infrastructure. We attempted to emphasize the turning points having a common denominator when searching through the archives. Our expectations to find few events and an abundance of photographs was reversed in the later stages of our work. The fact that there were many events but few photographs, particularly during the segment of time between 1899 and 1940, when photographs were not used extensively, was a striking fact which created significant problems. However, our knowledge as well as our hopes have been expanded by the advance in recent years in the fields displaying development in the consciousness of keeping archives.
We experienced the excitement of witnessing how much the techniques and more importantly, the structure of societal thought has
changed along with the language of expression when searching through newspaper clippings and books documenting past events. During the period exceeding a year when the years, events and photographs were being compiled into a book, we decided not to improve the photographs with computer techniques and to keep them in their original forms, particularly those documenting the first years, primarily from the aspect of reflecting the difficult techniques in the past and the technological developments during the period.
When we finished compiling the book, we realized that in fact we were still at the beginning, and how abundant the opportunity is of preparing countless catalogues on different values for the century. We paid special attention to prepare the book with the selections of the Directorate General of Press and Information from among the documents and photographs we have collected.
We extend our sincere gratitude to all the institutions, organizations and individuals whose names are given at the beginning of this book who have given us access to their archives during the research stages in preparing this book.
