Pamukkale - DENİZLİ

 

Among the counties of Denizli, encircled by many ancient cities such as Laodiceia and Colossae, Güney is famous for its wines and falls, Buldan for its looms and Çal for its vineyards.

 
Manisa, founded at the foot of Mt. Sipylus, is 40 km. from İzmir and is surrounded by vineyards. The Mt. Sipylus National Park is to the south of Manisa.
 
“Mesir Festival” is among the first events to recall when Manisa is mentioned. The history of this festival held annually in March dates back way into the past. Prepared as a blend of various spices, “Mesir Macunu” (Mesir Paste), which is believed to have cured Ayşe Sultan, the mother of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, is flung to the people from the veranda of the Sultan Mosque throughout the festival.
 
Sardis is the most imposing archaic city in Manisa. The capital city of the Lydian Kingdom, and located at the starting point of the famous “King’s Road” which extends towards the east, Sardis had been an important trading center throughout history. Metal coins started to be used as a commercial asset in Sardis for the first time in the world. The Temple of Artemis and the restored Gymnasium (3rd century A.D.) are the most frequented sites in the city.
 
 
 
 

Kütahya, an old city where Turkish traditions are kept alive, is coalesced with examples of Ottoman architecture and particularly well-known for its tiles. The house where the Hungarian folk hero Lajos Kossuth resided in the 19th century has been converted into the Kossuth Museum.

 
 
Uşak, famed for carpet making, is located at an important crossroad. The world-famous treasures of Croesus are on display at the Uşak Archeological Museum.
 

Afyon is founded on the slopes of a hill with a castle on the top. Artifacts from the environs are exhibited in the Afyon Museum.

 
Artifacts belonging to the Phrygian period constitute the most important section of the museum. Aslankaya, Aslantaş, Maltaş and Yılantaş are Phrygian open-air temples of monumental dimensions located to the north of the city.
