Atakule - ANKARA

 
 
 

The most eye-catching structure in Ankara is the Anıtkabir, a mausoleum built for Atatürk. Mighty Atatürk was moved from his temporary grave in the Museum of Ethnography to the Anıtkabir on November 10, 1953.

 
 

It is presumed that the Ankara Citadel, situated on the top of a hill dominating Ankara, was first constructed by the Celts in the 3rd century B.C. The Temple of Augustus in the Ulus District was constructed in the 2nd century A.D. The deeds accomplished by the Roman Emperor Augustus are inscribed on the walls of this Temple. The Roman baths, the theater and the Column of Julian are among the other works of the Roman era in the city.

 

The Aslanhane Mosque built in the 13th century and famed for its turquoise tiles in the prayer niche; the Hacı Bayram Mosque built in the 15th century Kütahya tiles, and the Kocatepe Mosque, the largest mosque in Ankara constructed between 1967 and 1987, impart a mystical aura to the city. The city is also famous for its monuments. Among these, the most notable ones are the Republic Monument in Ulus Square, the Victory Monument in Yenişehir district and the Hittite Monument in Sıhhiye Square.

 
Ankara, the administrative and political capital of Turkey, is also an important center for cultural and artistic activities. The Çıkrıkçılar Slope and the Bakırcılar (Coppersmiths) Market are charming historical shopping areas where various copper and brass souvenirs can be found. Ankara can be viewed in a panorama from the Atakule (125 m.) with a revolving restaurant, a cafe and an observation terrace.
 
The “White Gold” of Eskişehir: The world famous meerschaum, the symbol of Eskişehir, is a fine light clayey rare mineral. It is rather soft when extracted and gets harder in time. So it is referred to as “White Gold” in the region. A Meerschaum Festival is organized in Eskişehir every year.
 

Eskişehir is virtually a student city with more than 250,000 students. Anatolia University, the largest university in the country and among the first 10 in the world, is located in this city.
