Mountains Around, Vineyards in the Midst: The description made for the city of Erzincan, known since older times among the people as the place with “mountains around, vineyards in the midst”, explains the landscape of the city. The lands of the province are surrounded by mountain ranges both in the north and south. There are fertile lands in the river basins between these mountains. Erzincan Plain, in the midst of vineyards, has been the cradle of great civilizations since the early ages of history. Karaparmak grapes of Erzincan vineyards are quite famous. The traditional craft of copper smithery still preserved in Erzincan is significant. The Mama Hatun Turbeh and Caravanserai in Tercan (12th century), Altıntepe, an important settlement of the Urartians (1000 B.C.), the citadel in Kemah, the Melik Gazi Tomb and the Gülali Bey Mosque (12th century) may be cited among the historical sites around the city. |
