  Military Service: According to Article 72 of the Turkish Constitution, military service is the right and responsibility of every Turkish citizen. The basic recruitment policy is the acceptance into the armed forces of those with the best physical, mental and moral values and the best educational background. Recruitment sources differ for each military category and status. The basic source is male citizens responsible for defending the country, as put forth by the Constitution. Male citizens who reach the age of 20 are recruited in accordance with their level of education and physical state.  
 
Following recent amendments, the period of military service and status for,
 
Graduates of three years of higher education or less: 15 months as a private or a sergeant,

Graduates of four-year faculties and schools of higher learning: 12 months as a reserve officer,

Surplus from the graduates of four-year faculties: 6 months as a short-term private or sergeant,

Workers or businessmen with employer status living abroad: 21 days and a payment in foreign currency.
 
These figures may change according to the needs of the Turkish Armed Forces by the decisions of the Council of Ministers or by amendment to the related laws.
