The Textile and Apparel Industry: The Turkish textile and apparel industry is the driving force of the industrial sector. Turkey is the world’s sixth-biggest cotton producer and almost 85% of its textile and apparel exports are cotton cloths. Almost 40-45% of the total output of the textile industry is exported. The share of apparel exports, on the other hand, rises to about 65%. Turkey is the world’s tenth largest textile exporter and the fourth largest ready-to-wear clothing exporter. As far as EU markets are concerned, Turkey is the sixth largest textile exporter and the second largest apparel exporter. Germany, United States, United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands and the Russian Federation are Turkey’s most important markets regarding exports of textile products. |

700,000 people are registered as employed in the textile and apparel sector in Turkey. The main production facilities of this sector are concentrated in the provinces of Ýstanbul, Bursa, Denizli, Adana, Gaziantep, Kahramanmaraþ and Kayseri. |

with the European Union, the textile and ready-to-wear sector has increased its competitive capability in foreign markets and has maintained its export-oriented growth. However, the sector has faced diffi-culties in recent years from competition with countries such as China and India, which have cheap labor force.
Exports of this sector, consti-tuting 24% of total industrial exports, amounted to 19.4 billion USD in 2006.
Turkey is one of the leading countries in terms of quality and quantity of leather ware production.

Fashion: Currently Turkey’s textile and apparel sector plays a very important role in the process of economic development in view of the employment opportunities and the added value it creates as well as the unique place it occupies in international trade. The share of the textile, apparel, leather and shoe sector in the total added value created by the manufacturing industry is 21%. The production technology and the product quality of this sector comply with contemporary world standards.

Turkey’s vicinity to the markets of the EU, Russia and Turkish republics as well as the steadily developing economic relations with these nations are considered very important opportunities for sustainable development of the textile and apparel sector.
